Someone got it very right.

Wednesday, March 30th, 2005

My new iSight just arrived. (For those of you not up on all the Apple gizmos, the iSight is basically a premium-quality webcam/mic, intended for videoconferencing rather than HTTP webcam display.) This thing is swish. The link shows you the device in its assembled state; it comes in a slick little package like the iPod, [...]

Rumour mill: alive and well.

Wednesday, March 30th, 2005

Appletalk.com.au is reporting that iTMS.au – that’s the Australian iteration of the iTunes Music Store – is in the “on again” phase of its rumoured status. This is the third go-round of rumours we’ve had; each time it’s looked like happening, the launch has been scotched by licensing issues. (Australia’s copyright and licensing laws are [...]

Using my Powerbook.

Tuesday, March 29th, 2005

The last vestiges of resistance towards Switching have evaporated like morning dew.

First I upgrade my Powerbook, and discover that about 75% of the discomfort of my old Powerbook was because it was old and slow. The new machine is lovely.
Then my second PC packs it in – before I’ve even got the first one fixed.
Then [...]

Three strikes, and we’re out - of luck.

Sunday, March 27th, 2005

I kept meaning to blog about this, but forgot: Yahoo! has acquired Flickr, as most of you probably know already.

I am not sanguine about the results of this merger. While I’m not necessarily anti-change, and I don’t care to be a panic-monger, Yahoo! has not endeared itself to me over the last half-decade. First it [...]

Photos: bullets and graffiti.

Sunday, March 27th, 2005
Graphic Junkies is a site maintained by an active law enforcement officer in the state of Georgia. The main purpose of this site is to offer a view, perspective if you will, of the world through the eyes of one police officer.

His photos are really quite incredible; they veer from stark macro shots to [...]

From drought to deluge.

Sunday, March 20th, 2005

It’s been a grim couple of months, movie-wise. The last movie I saw was Elektra, and I regretted that; apart from Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (which I missed), there’s been a dearth of appealing movies lately. It looks like the next couple of months are going to change that, though:

Be Cool: [...]

Familiar faces.

Sunday, March 20th, 2005

Now here’s a bit of joy, and an example of the power of social software on the net.

I post to the Macintosh group on Flickr, and as I was browsing it tonight I spied a post by one Shauna talking about how her iBook was named Harvey – sure enough, it was Shauny’s photostream. (Okay, [...]

Tagging: part 1, the introduction

Saturday, March 19th, 2005

Tagging is all the rage. Flickr started it, really, with their photo tags, and various other data providers have taken the idea and run with it. For those of you who haven’t come across tagging, Flickr’s the best example of how it works: when you upload a photo, you include a number of keywords that [...]

Zarniwoop - he is mine!

Friday, March 18th, 2005

Zarniwoop arrived today. He is shiny, silver and new. His keys are soft and elegant; his button is clicky and clean. I am a very happy owner of a brand new 12.1” PowerBook G4.

Everything runs so fast! And I’ve got the wireless network up and running, so both Powerbooks are happily chirping away at the [...]

Ack! OMG! Panic! Woe!

Tuesday, March 15th, 2005

Sitting in the middle of my Business Communications lecture, I notice that the time counter on my iPod (which was supposed to be busy recording the lecture) had stopped ticking over.

The wheel didn’t respond.

When I plugged it into the PowerBook, nothing happened.

Commence panic! This thing had all today’s recorded lectures on it, and I’ve come [...]

Son, put down the stapler and step away from the coloured pens.

Tuesday, March 15th, 2005

Just in case you thought the Americans had a monopoly on in(s)ane zero-tolerance school policies, here’s one from the UK. A British primary school is cracking down and getting tough on the serious problem of… pencil cases?

That’s right; pencil cases can be used to carry deadly weapons! Like coloured pencils, erasers, Uzis, and exploding sheep. [...]

Lecturers, swings and roundabouts.

Monday, March 14th, 2005

It is extremely intellectually frustrating when a lecturer stimulates discussion only to railroad it to make their own point. If they’re purporting to be interested in discussion, they need to allow it to progress dynamically and organically, giving people a chance to talk when an appropriate or interesting point occurs to them (within reason) – [...]

Incongruity ahoy!

Monday, March 14th, 2005

I’ve believed two impossible things before breakfast today already; only four to go.

On the way into Uni today, a fifty-ish man with an avuncular smile stood by the entrance, handing out free products. “Would you like a copy of the New Testament?” I smiled and waved him away, and then smiled more broadly to see [...]

Even a Wookiee army can’t save you now, George.

Saturday, March 12th, 2005

I just downloaded and watched the trailer for Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith. I now hold absolutely no hope that it’s going to be any good. If these are the ‘best bits’ of the movie, then it’s an ignoble end to a much-loved series. The prequels have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory; [...]

Porn biscuits!

Friday, March 11th, 2005

For years, Tim Tams were the quintessential Aussie biscuit. They came in one flavour: delicious.

Then Arnott’s started producing other varieties; dark choc, double-dipped, caramel, and so on. Now they’re producing boutique Tim Tam varieties, including booze-soaked ones and the “Dangerous Liaisons” range. But I have to wonder what market they’re targeting with these Dangerous Liaisons [...]

Tantrum in the wind-up phase:

Friday, March 11th, 2005

I want my PowerBook! Zarniwoop, be mine!

I am not a patient person at the best of times, and this isn’t the best of times. GIMME!

On the up side, I’ve mostly figured out what I’m going to call my PCs if I do implement the new naming conventions.

  [...]

WoW! It’s another addiction!

Friday, March 11th, 2005

I refer, of course, to World of Warcraft, the phenomenally-successful MMORPG from Blizzard. After loving SWG and dabbling in EQ2, I’ve settled for now on WoW and I’m finding it very satisfying. I could – and probably will – expostulate at length about WoW and what it does right, and why it’s so good. But [...]

The new beloved.

Thursday, March 10th, 2005

Computer, that is.

On Monday night I tried out Apple’s online store – well, I buy everything else online, why not computers too? – and ordered my new laptop. It’s an upgrade for my current Powerbook, which is somewhat behind the tech curve, and I’ll sell it on eBay once my new one is arrived and [...]

Memory? What was that, again?

Thursday, March 10th, 2005

I’m looking at the WordPress editing interface and I can see I have a saved draft of a blog post. The title is “Well, mine is twelve inches…” which certainly provokes interest. Unfortunately, I have no idea what it was going to be about; I’m sure it was something tech-related – but what?!

Forget own head [...]

Handbag Whore.

Wednesday, March 9th, 2005

A friend at Uni always used to claim that I was more of a ‘girly girl’ than her, based on my more-than-adequate supplies of perfume and makeup, and my jewellery addiction.

However, I’ve found my true reservoir of girlie-dom, if I have one, and it’s hanging on the back of my bedroom and study doors.

I have [...]
