Not dead, again!

Tuesday, January 24th, 2006

Well – I’m still not dead. I’ve had an extremely busy couple of months – exams, holiday, Christmas – but things are settling back into a routine.

I’ve just started a new job, working as the information manager for Krome Studios, and it’s providing me with much food for thought. Unlike previous jobs, it’s a challenge [...]

Not dead, nor even sleeping.

Wednesday, September 28th, 2005

So, it’s been months since my last post. I wasn’t lying then; I really have been in the wars. More so, lately – the day after I wrote that post, I came down with acute allergic conjunctivits, which has since turned into chronic allergic conjunctivitis. My opthalmologist is of little help. The gist is, I [...]

In the wars.

2005 is the Year of the Injury. First a case of cellulitis that caused a potential clot and a lot of mobility issues; then a range of allergic reactions to just about everything in the world; then a sliced-open finger that mashed up my nailbed and taught me new things about my capacity for pain.

Apparently [...]

Where I’m going.

Thursday, June 16th, 2005

Ever since I realised that science wasn’t the career for me, about ten years ago, I’ve been cruising through life trying to find a vocation that would really grab me.

Thankfully, today, I found it. It’s a job I’ve wanted to do for the better part of a decade, but the last time I looked at [...]

Brisbane on Ice.

prelude00 – photo by stephen dann

Brisbane was visited by a massive hailstorm yesterday. It rolled in around five in the evening, skies green and purple like a fading bruise. We drove home in the middle of it, watching lighting split the skies. It was absolutely gorgeous.

There’s a group on Flickr devoted to photos of it, [...]

Unintentional Punning

Wednesday, May 18th, 2005

One of my subjects this teaching period is GSN409 Organisational Behaviour 1. Most people abbreviate this to OB1, though I hadn’t given that much thought as I’d only ever been writing it, not saying it.

Until yesterday, when I chatted to some of the other students about the subject, and they kept referring to it by [...]

Hole in the River

Monday, May 16th, 2005

So, the house across the road from me isn’t there any more.

Now, I’m pretty oblivious about the outside world – there are days when I don’t actually see anything outside these four walls, and I’m fine with that – so for all I know, it could have been stolen away in the night by gnomes, [...]

Nice to know someone has a sense of humour.

From the tag of my “Original Pocket Umbrella”. All emphasis is theirs:Do not use in event of storm, hurricane, typhoon, or serious climatic disturbance.

If you do, your Original Pocket Umbrella may break and then you will be very upset!

Please remember the Original Pocket Umbrella is not a toy and you are not Mary Poppins. Do [...]

Familiar faces.

Now here’s a bit of joy, and an example of the power of social software on the net.

I post to the Macintosh group on Flickr, and as I was browsing it tonight I spied a post by one Shauna talking about how her iBook was named Harvey – sure enough, it was Shauny’s photostream. (Okay, [...]

Memory? What was that, again?

Thursday, March 10th, 2005

I’m looking at the WordPress editing interface and I can see I have a saved draft of a blog post. The title is “Well, mine is twelve inches…” which certainly provokes interest. Unfortunately, I have no idea what it was going to be about; I’m sure it was something tech-related – but what?!

Forget own head [...]

Handbag Whore.

Wednesday, March 9th, 2005

A friend at Uni always used to claim that I was more of a ‘girly girl’ than her, based on my more-than-adequate supplies of perfume and makeup, and my jewellery addiction.

However, I’ve found my true reservoir of girlie-dom, if I have one, and it’s hanging on the back of my bedroom and study doors.

I have [...]

Orphan works.

Wednesday, March 9th, 2005
eldred.cc is operating a campaign to save orphan works.

Orphan works are a category of copyright item where – broadly speaking – the copyright owner can’t be reliably identified or tracked down, except through unreasonable means or prohibitive costs.

The US Copyright Office is asking the public (presumably only the American public, but it’s worth taking [...]

Taxi drivers have the best stories…

Tuesday, March 8th, 2005

Tonight’s cab driver was telling me about the various incidents he’d seen as a driver – like the night he was driving along the Captain Cook Bridge, rounds the corner, and sees a car stopped in the middle of the street. “Okay”, he thinks, “that’s a bummer of a place to break down”.

Noooo. The back [...]

Via Slumbering Lungfish, it’s The artist, Steven Frank, illustrates actual spam subject lines with cartoons.

I think this one’s my favourite: Enjoy your love life as much as he does

Blogger and blogspot.

Wednesday, February 9th, 2005

I’m really very impressed. I just signed up for a Blogger account so I could comment on blogspot blogs without having to be anonymous. Of course, Blogger wanted me to set up a blog on the way through, so I thought ‘what the hell’. (I’m not quite sure what I’ll do with another blog. Possibly [...]

Creativity in retrospect.

Sunday, February 6th, 2005

Now and then I stumble across an old piece of writing in a documents folder, or stop to read an old assignment while sorting my filing cabinet. Usually – and I shouldn’t admit this – I’m impressed that I managed to write something literate and readable; once it’s far enough in the past that I’m [...]

Cynicism for success.

Remember that managers are essentially secretaries who can fire you.
Kuro5hin’s just posted a very honest guide to software development the political way. It notes the problems of sabotage, both deliberate and incidental, descoping, managing management, ass-covering and so on. It’s particularly relevant to software development, but its basic honesty – brutal honesty, at that – [...]

Testing, testing. No post by email, apparently.

Sunday, January 23rd, 2005

WordPress offers one of the features that I like best about LiveJournal – the ability to post by email. It wouldn’t be nearly so useful if I didn’t now have access to my own mailserver, where I can set up any email addresses at the eleanorholmes.com domain that I choose.

So, let’s see if this works… [...]
