Using my Powerbook.

The last vestiges of resistance towards Switching have evaporated like morning dew.

First I upgrade my Powerbook, and discover that about 75% of the discomfort of my old Powerbook was because it was old and slow. The new machine is lovely.
Then my second PC packs it in – before I’ve even got the first one fixed.
Then I get an email from Dad waxing lyrical about how marvellous their new iMac is – this from a man who’s been cynical and grumpy about technology for the last decade or more.
And now tonight, on a whim, I plug my Powerbook into my LCD monitor and run dual-monitor.

Wow.

It has become clear that my remaining discomfort with OS X had been because the interface had felt obtrusive and clunky. This is, I now realise, because my Powerbook has a 12” screen and there’s only so much you can fit into twelve inches, unless you’re talking about porn. When operating on a 17” screen – or better yet, a 17” plus a 12” – OS X is nothing short of delightful.

My current plan, although it will take a while to eventuate: buy a specced-up iMac 17”, kill off one of my PCs, and relegate the other one to a media centre/file server. (The media-centre part I’ve been planning for months, but none of the PCs have stayed functional long enough to implement the plan.)

This plan may change slightly if it turns out that iMacs will only mirror onto a second monitor, not operate a proper dual-monitor setup. In that case I’ll probably buy a 20” iMac instead.

And now, now I’m going to shut up and stop talking about my bloody computers – at least for a while. I promise. (I’ve got a few half-written posts about various other things, but all of them required too much thought to finish at 3:45am.)

All of this is, of course, an attempt to avoid thinking about my Marketing exam tomorrow. It’s not working – I’m still thinking about it. Which means it’s bedtime. Night all – wish me luck!

There is a hack for enabling dual monitor support (not just mirroring) on lower-end Macs (inc. the iMac).
